F-Secure has unveiled a new type of fake AV (anti-virus) on Facebook spreading in different names such as Facebook Antivirus, Facebook antivirus and Antivirus in Facebook. This kind of counterfeit AV is revealed to show up fake links with Panda Cloud Antivirus, with the titles namely Cloud Antivirus, Panda Cloud Antivirus & Panda Antivirus Free Download.

The infection spread is discerned to spread via a contact with a friend of those people who find themselves in a quagmire as the program attaches images obtained from a genuine application.

It is reported that when placed onto a Facebook profile, the program will affix its own image together with 20 people’s names fetched randomly from the victim’s address book. From there, when the individuals discover their names attached, they naturally click on the image.

In addition, a random link in the image is known to appear, which when clicked, an option appeared which allegedly enables the user to access the program from his profile.

Security researchers, addressing the issue, said that Facebook Antivirus was merely one more sample of worthless application, hazardous to gullible users.

In his blog on Facebook, Mark Zuckerburg(oh yes the guy who gifted us with FB) talks about what FB was planned for, what it has become and its potential and also what new is going to be added to it.

Why so? Cuz it so happens that Facebook has completed six years. SIX years. Wow. I didn’t know it had been around that long.

FB is 400 million strong. For its sixth celebration there is going to be a party at the Facebook headquarters where a few new things are going to be released including a couple that are high on demands.

After the launch the night is dedicated to coding and building newer products.

Information needed to be freed and shopping needed to be accessible. There could only ever be one pets.com. Exoticpets.com, rarepets.com, rareexoticpets.com, and rareexoticpetfood.com would all be outposts in the wilderness without a road to lead you there. Google’s benevolent hands built that road. And they built millions of other roads. And then they lined these roads with billboards. And with the money they made on these billboards, they built entire cities of industry. And within these cities, they erected more billboards. And pretty soon, Google, the mere builder of roads, owned half of the frontier, which was no longer a frontier, but a megalopolis without borders.”</div>

People seem to have no dearth of ideas when it comes to making money. And it’s amazing how anyone can cash in money on what’s hot now and the “in-thing”
Consider this bunch of guys who have set up something called “Fuck Google” and on their site they defend their moves and state the benefits of their Endeavour.

This group of intelligent men are holding a get-together sorts in Berlin where they will tell their registered fellows how to use and manipulate Google at free will.

If you haven’t paid attention to the new privacy settings and mindlessly clicked on with the default one’s then you might end up sharing a lot more than you intended to!

FB recently announced that in order to encourage members to share more information , it has upgraded its privacy settings, making several categories of information of its users visible by default to everyone, unless you actively manage the settings people can see your family, relationships, education, work and not to mention posts( orkut analogy : they’ll be able to see your profile and your scraps!), regardless of what the previous settings were ( hmmm…ok if you don’t do anything wrong on the net but if your parents are on FB too then change your settings!)

Encouragement apart, I think the revised settings is a very clever move to get search engines index more information from the site , in order to counter growing competition from micro blogging sites like Twitter.

Over the past 24 hours, two of the largest Facebook application developers, RockYou and Zynga, have announced relatively large funding rounds. RockYou raised a whopping $50 million and Zynga raised $15.18 million. What are these rounds going toward? RockYou is apparently turning their attention toward the booming social gaming space and expanding their advertising efforts, while Zynga is most likely stocking up on cash to help build out their ever expanding portfolio of popular games.

Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding the offers space, both companies have rapidly increasing revenue bases. Zynga has revenues of somewhere between $150 million and $240 million depending on what source you listen to, while RockYou revenues are rumored to be between $30 and $40 million. RockYou has raised an incredible $119 million to date which means the company will have to dramatically increase revenue over the next couple years if the investors are going to obtain a significant return on their investment.

Both companies have come under fire for the ads running in their network, however they both appear committed to cleaning things up. While this RockYou investment appears to be a significant doubling down by their existing investor, Softbank, it’s not a completely outlandish investment given that RockYou is one of the leading brands on the social web. We’ll have to wait to find out what RockYou will be using this funding toward but I’d expect at least a couple new applications out of this round of funding.

Facebook has been used to accomplish a lot of things including organizing global protests, running political campaigns, and even hunt down criminals. On Friday, the first “crowd-sourced” movie to be developed, “Live Music”, will be released. The movie, was developed by connecting artists from around the world on Facebook via the Mass Animation Facebook page.

The movie was developed by a whopping 58,000+ participants from 101 countries who provided input and 51 animators who collaborated to develop the film. While not all of the 58,000 fans of the project provided input, it illustrates how Facebook can be used to connect individuals from around the world to accomplish just about anything. For those that aren’t aware of the story line for “Live Music”, it’s a love story about a guitar and a violin.

So how were the animators that contributed to the project selected? Participants could vote on which animators should be part of the final project, via an Intel sponsored Facebook application. Animators uploaded their reels and any participant could vote on those reels which they liked best. Many of those reels have also been uploaded to the Mass Animation video submissions area.

If you are interested in learning more about the movie, check out the Mass Animation Facebook page and watch the videos below. Also, for those of you interested in participating in future Mass Animation projects, yesterday a new contest application launched which will give DC Comics fans, gamers and animators a chance to animate heroes and villains from the DC Universe Online game and to collaborate in creating a CGI tailer an in-game character animations. Learn more via the Mass Animation Facebook Page and the Mass Animation application.

Communist regimes and dictators really do not like Facebook. We’ve written about China blocking Facebook on an ongoing basis, and now Vietnam is possibly blocking the site as well. According to Ben Stockton of AP, “Over the last week, access to Facebook has been intermittent in the country, whose government tightly controls the flow of information.” We’ve seen access to Facebook limited before but this is the first time we’ve heard of issues in Vietnam.

While we’ve reached out to Facebook, we’ve yet to hear back from the company. Vietnam currently has approximately 1 million users according to Facebook’s own advertising estimates. The primary source of concerns about Facebook being shut down, is “an unauthenticated document circulating on the internet—which says it was issued by Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security”. The document, “instructs Internet service providers to block Facebook”.

While Facebook has been seen by some as a tool for spreading democracy around the world, the biggest hurdle to doing so is clearly regimes who decide to block the site all together. Whether it’s Iran, Vietnam, China, or other countries, censoring the internet is critical to the survival of oppressive regimes. For the time being we’ll have to wait and see how this story evolves, but it appears that Facebook may have to deal with yet another country blocking access to the rapidly expanding site.

Update

Facebook has provided us with the following statement: “We have seen media reports that users in Vietnam are having problems accessing Facebook. We would be very disappointed if users in any country were to have difficulties accessing Facebook.” In other words, they aren’t confirming or denying issues but they pointed us to the following site which reports on websites that are inaccessible. However the level of inaccessibility appears to be relatively low. We’re reaching out to a few other people to see if we can get any more information.

This evening, Sony officially announced support for Facebook on the Playstation 3. While integration was first rumored last week, there is now an official video of the Facebook features which we’ve embedded below. Included in the integration is the ability to: share trophy information, share purchase information, and share game event information. Each of these features take place automatically once configured.

XBox integration officially went live today for XBox Live users who were interested in testing it out and my guess is that this launch expedited the process for PS3, who’s announcement couldn’t be more timely. One feature not supported by XBox which the Playstation 3 provides, is the ability to share information about games that you purchase via Playstation’s online store.

If you want to view your Facebook account from the Playstation 3, you can navigate to the site via the PS3’s built-in web browser. While you may not want to play a quick round of Bejeweled Blitz using the PS3 browser’s navigation controls, you’ll at least be able to view your personal updates as well as those posted by your friends. If you want more information about the Plastation 3 integration with Facebook, check out the video below or read more on the Playstation 3 blog.

Tonight millions of people around the world will stare up at the sky to watch meteors crash into our atmosphere resulting in beautiful explosions (as long as you aren’t in the city). So far over 900,000 people have registered for the Lenoid Meteor Shower 2009 event on Facebook which means there’s a decent chance you’ve seen it show up in your news feed.

So what do you need to know about the event? Well the first thing you’ll need to know is that you need to stay up late if you’re on the east coast. Fortunately, if you’re reading this article, you probably will be up a little longer! Another thing that would be good for improving your viewing experience would be to hop on a teleportation device or the next supersonic jet you can find, in hopes that you reach Asia in time to see 300 – 400 meteors per hour.

If you are in the U.S. you can enjoy upwards of 30 meteors an hour, but make sure you aren’t sitting in the city, as the light will damage your ability to check out the meteor shower. Is it worth staying up all night to see the meteor shower? Probably not, however waking up for an hour to check it out probably isn’t a bad idea.

While I’m guessing more than 1 million people will see the meteor showers, 924,000 have registered for the event so far. That’s up over 20,000 in the past hour so there’s a good chance the event could surpass 1 million shortly. Will you be watching or sleeping?

Just when I said that the Connect video promotions had become a trend, I noticed a comment on Facebook highlighting yet another video promotion, this time for the television show CSI. This promotion involves the user depicted as a criminal who’s being pursued by the CSI team. It’s a creative use of Facebook Connect however it’s fairly similar to many of the other promotion that we’ve written about in the past, including the Fight Club promotion which we covered on Friday.

Just like all the other Connect-enabled promotions that we’ve covered, this one integrates a user’s photos and profile information into a video. So can we write about every single video that integrates Facebook Connect? At a certain point doesn’t it lose it’s novelty? Damn right. Beyond a video which pulls information from your profile, there’s fairly little to this promotion which has much appeal. Then again, we all enjoy seeing ourselves in videos, so from that perspective, this promotion technique will never get old.

I could see CBS taking this to another level by integrating your data into actual television shows but unfortunately we’re still at the very early stages of leveraging identity data for integrated media. If you want a promotion of your own, go check out the CSI Crossover promotion.
